The importance of Pogus’s photos is that he took them in order to document the importance of thesese black musical creators- at the time when DIGITAL WAS NOT KING!

One has to remember that there is a new generation of image makers who no nothing of film. Music images like that of Pogus Caesar and others hold vital clues to the fleeting relationship between subject and photographer. Recently I purchased a copy of Muzik Kinda Sweet at Birmingham’s Ikon Gallery. i was struck by not only the wealth of images captured in one volume but the sheer density and darkness of the print. it worked and they drew the eye to examine every inch of the plate.

Caesar’s work has always been true to 35mm.
His contribution to documenting black musicans who have visited Birmingham is really important.
The new book “muzik kinda sweet” cuts into a treasure trove of archives, it makes us examine the importance of the contribution that these artists have given to the world. If you are into Rock, Jazz, Techno, Rap or Pop then this book is important reference material. The Oom gallery archives should be more available to the public – here’s hoping.
