VIVID @ We Are Eastside open weekend

2010.03.10

SATURDAY 27 MARCH | 3-5 PM | admission FREE
MATT STOKES
TREVOR PITT with Shelli Graham

Between 3pm and 5pm VIVID presents recent moving image work by Becks Futures prize-winning artist Matt Stokes. Stokes’ films investigate underground movements and music scenes, particularly the way in which events contribute to a collective social experience. This preview offers a taster for new works commissioned from Stokes for a solo exhibition at VIVID in 2011.

Trevor Pitt, Sleevenotes with Roy Davies (2009). Artwork by Shelli Graham (2010).

Also at VIVID artist-curator Trevor Pitt will launch the second phase of his Sleeve Notes project. Starting with a tweet, Pitt will look at how social media can proliferate information and widen participation in events which would otherwise stay ‘underground’. Using Twitter, Facebook, MySpace, SMS, and email, Pitt will create a platform for collective memory and discussion, unearthing remnants from Birmingham’s cultural underground. Whether you have followed Pitt’s journey online or not, join us at VIVID on Saturday 27th March, where digital meets analogue as artist Shelli Graham uncovers a cornucopia of LPs, badges and films. Visitor participation is essential!

Both works are presented as part of the We Are Eastside open weekend (26-28 March 2010).

One Response to “VIVID @ We Are Eastside open weekend

[...] A bug bear I have about Birmingham is creativity occurs on the fringes of the city, and often this can make us appear self deprecating. It’s almost as if were embarrassed by our artists so we push them to the outskirts. Don’t get me wrong, I’m behind the redefined Eastside. In fact I wrote the brochure’s main copy. But where I struggled was working out how to make art accessible and appealing in description, without appearing to trivialise or belittle ‘the art.’ A picture paints a thousand words, I just wanted people to visit Eastside and make up their own minds. Hopefully, many will this weekend. [...]
