Cult artists Ayo and Oni Oshodi invite you to the launch of their new zine, Slain by the Cruel Blade of Post-Modernity.

In homage to punk-fan-culture, this free inaugural edition is an unashamedly personal, coded and sly take on their identity as ‘identical twins’ and perspective on culture.

Continuing their series of ‘hiding performances’ Ayo and Oni will complement the launch with cryptic interventions from a hidden spot; while making their personal mask collection available for attendees to enjoy for the first time.

An evening screening of video works concerned with the rendering of virtual space, the digital and the immaterial by Ed Atkins, Tom Badley, Trisha Baga, David Raymond Conroy, Richard Healy, Wiliam Rounce and Mark Titchner, followed by celebration drinks and a chance to informally chat with the Open File curators.

Science Talk: What is consciousness? Wednesday 7 December 6.30-8pm Eastside Projects

What we think we know about consciousness has led to many philosophical and scientific problems about what it is, how it can exist in a physical universe, and how biological evolution could have produced it. But is there a unique “it” or are there many varieties of consciousness? Aaron Sloman is a philosopher and researcher on artificial intelligence and cognitive science. He will explore how some of the problems arise from conceptual confusions, and how things we have learnt in the last 60 years or so about complex information processing systems including lots of so-called interacting virtual machines can give us new conceptual tools for understand what we, and other organisms, are, what it is to be conscious, and what sorts of consciousness we can expect in future machines.

Aaron Sloman held the Chair in Artificial Intelligence and Cognitive Science at the School of Computer Science at the University of Birmingham, and before that a chair with the same title at the University of Sussex. He is now working with biologist Jackie Chappell on the evolution of intelligence and is Honorary Professor of Artificial Intelligence and Cognitive Science at Birmingham.

For the third instalment of Open File we invite you to join us for a short weekend walk from the gallery on the bank of the River Rea, along the Grand Union canal to St Phillips Cathedral in the centre of town.

We’ll start 2pm on Saturday 3 December at Grand Union with mince pies, mulled wine, and an informal introduction to the Open File archive with curators Jack Brindley and Tim Dixon.

At 2:30pm we’ll set off on the walk from Grand Union and you’ll be part of the production of a new sound work in and around ‘Old Birmingham’ with artists Dallas Simpson and Matt Westbrook.

This is a free event, no need to book. Please wear sensible footwear and wrap up warm. The walk will last for around 1 hour 30 minutes.

Join us at Grand Union for the second in the series of Open File events; a screening of Harun Farocki’s Arbeiter verlassen di Fabrik (Workers leaving the factory)followed by Pavilion’s David Spraggs in conversation with Open File curators Jack Brindley and Tim Dixon.

Pavilion is a research project into the relationship between contemporary culture and capitalism. Focusing on spatial politics and production, Pavilion will present a specially curated film programme.
